IU School of Medicine coordinates significant events throughout the academic year for medical students.
Fall Session (August through December)
First Year Orientation
The required statewide IU School of Medicine First Year Orientation and Welcome Week are held each August in Indianapolis as an introduction to the School of Medicine. Optional activities are available throughout the week including the annual Service Project & College & House Field Day. The week concludes with required sessions on Thursday and Friday which include an introduction to school leadership and individual campus sessions. Housing is provided to regional campus students.
First-Year Orientation and Welcome Week Activities introduce students to IU School of Medicine. It is held the week prior to the start of class each August and all first year IUSM students are encouraged to attend. Optional activities are available all week leading up to the required Orientation program on Thursday and Friday. A wide range of activities are available throughout the week including the annual student sponsored Field Day and the Medical Service Learning Project that all students are invited to attend.
White Coat Ceremony
The White Coat Ceremony marks a transformation for first year students entering into the medical community in the presence of family, friends and school leadership. The formal program is generally held off campus on the Friday afternoon/evening of Orientation. Tickets are required.
Medical students are invited to participate in mock interviews to simulate what they will experience as they apply for their residencies.
Student Leadership Reception
IU School of Medicine honors medical student leaders for their hard work and contributions to the school.
Each year the IU School of Medicine Dean’s Office sponsors a Student Leadership reception to recognize students who serve as Medical Student Council and Medical Service-Learning officers in particular and all officers in general for their hard work and contributions to Indiana University School of Medicine.
Gold Humanism Honor Society
IU School of Medicine hosts an annual ceremony to honor fourth year medical students, residents and faculty being inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
Spring Session (January through May)
Student Leadership Interview Day
Medical Student Council provides a variety of appointed leadership opportunities available through an interview process available after the first of each year. Elections are also held for classes officers and SIGs.
IU School of Medicine Second Year Show (2YS)
The IU School of Medicine Second Year Show (2YS) is an annual, student-run production produced by 2nd year students. The programs aims at unifying faculty, staff and students from all nine campuses for a night of fun and comradery.
Graduating students learn where they will spend the next step of their career in medicine nationally and simultaneously in mid-March at noon, EST at the annual IU School of Medicine
For the Class of 2017, Match Day will be held on Friday, March 17, in the Van Nuys Medical Science Atrium on the IU School of Medicine Campus in Indianapolis.
The IU School of Medicine Senior Banquet and Awards Ceremony is an annual program sponsored by the graduating class. The program is generally held on Friday evening prior to Commencement to honor students, faculty and staff that have made an impact on the graduating students.
IU School of Medicine Commencement is traditionally held over Mother’s Day weekend where friends, family and school leadership gather to celebrate the graduates accomplishments.
The Class of 2017 IUSM Graduation will be at the Indiana Convention Center in the Sagamore Ballroom on Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until approximately noon.
